Eyes
Alongside my school portfolio I have been working on my own personal project surrounding eyes. However, as my school portfolio progressed I found myself being drawn to how horror can be presented through the eyes; manipulating them amongst other facial features and landscapes to create a range of interesting and meaningful designs. The whole idea behind my personal project was to explore the idea that ‘eyes are the windows to the soul,’ which was an idea that was gradually beginning to develop itself within my school project. As time went on I decided to combine both projects into one, making my personal study into a mini project within my study of horror as a whole. Nevertheless, to be able to distinguish what parts of my main portfolio originally belonged to my personal work I decided to create a page dedicated to my study of the eyes.
“Eyes are the windows to the soul”

Whilst exploring eyes within my project I wanted to develop my skills in terms of both drawing and painting; illustrating a range of different eyes using coloured pencil and refining my designs with black pens, white pens and white acrylic paints. I wanted to practice drawing the proportions and developing some understanding of its shape and form before moving onto more sophisticated mediums.
I then painted an eye using oil paints on wood, focusing on the application of tone whilst using a medium I haven’t really used before. After I began experimenting using watercolour, creating a few studies focusing purely on developing the detail within the iris of the eyes. I then moved onto creating studies of the entire eye, focusing on realism before beginning to become more illustrative in my work as shown within the last image.
All of the skills that I developed within my personal project helped me when developing more sophisticated designs within my main project, focusing on how horror can be presented through the eyes.
